HP de100c & HP de200c Hard Drive Swap (edited by Lee to remove some unnecessary steps) I swapped the 20gb Seagate w/ an 80gb Western Digital, the WD is a little louder then the Seagate, if you can afford/find it, use a Seagate Barracuda V HD, they are considerably quieter, they run about 150 bucks for a 100gb HD.. I also dropped in a 256mb stick of PC133 RAM that I had laying around. This is a compilation of help from different members of the Yahoo Group. This process worked for me, I don't make any claims on this working for everyone. Feel free to make changes. just add a footnote at the bottom to indicate new version and date, I am NOT a Linux user, if there is command line script error I apologize, and feel free to fix. A USB keyboard will make your life a little better when using the DEC, I used my Apple pro USB KB. Remember everything is case sensitive when using a terminal. Be sure new drive is jumped Master. Connect the DEC to a LAN/Internet and TV, and follow registration directions. Force an Auto-Update by holding down CD + INTERNET RADIO + RECORD for several seconds. It should Update to 1.4.201. This update allows telnet connection with a terminal application. Create an Recovery Disc from the ISO file, Download it here : ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/software/fsInstall-1.4.201.iso I used Adaptec Toast and Mac OS X Disc Copy to make the Recovery Disc from the ISO. Open a Terminal. I used WinXP, I could not get the MacOS X Terminal to connect In Windows - START -> RUN -> CMD type: telnet YOUR.DEC.IP.HERE It will pop up a query "login" type "root" it will ask for the rolling P/W and you must use the "Password Decoder" http://www.gamblin.net/dec the decoder looks like this: (this is just an example) 1111111 1234567890123456<---ruler BIOSPW = 7ro1ZGb^j4tM\8wj 0 - 7ro1ZGb^ 1 - ro1ZGb^j 2 - o1ZGb^j4 3 - 1ZGb^j4t 4 - ZGb^j4tM 5 - Gb^j4tM\ 6 - b^j4tM\8 7 - ^j4tM\8w 8 - j4tM\8wj 9 - 4tM\8wj7 10 - tM\8wj7r 11 - M\8wj7ro 12 - \8wj7ro1 13 - 8wj7ro1Z 14 - wj7ro1ZG 15 - j7ro1ZGb After entering an 8 character the P/W starting at the offset number specified before the password, you will be logged in. Then type: cd /opt/fiji/utils Now you must Unlock the DEC so you can boot w/ the ISO Recovery Disk. Type: ./unlockDec (your password is now 'redhat') [Note added by Lee on 1/6/03: At this point, you should start up the dec again to confirm it is unlocked and allows you to log in. Then put in the recovery CD and power down the dec and unplug it.] Swap the Old HD w/ the New drive. Reconnect everything to the DEC, and press Power. It should begin to Load the fail Safe Image off the CD onto the New HD. Be patient it may take a little while. You will have to fill in Registration process again. 2/2/2003 version 2.0
